Statement Ahead of President Biden’s Philadelphia Remarks

September 01, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Joe Biden pledged during his inaugural address to be a unifying president, and as president-elect, said that “[Trump supporters] are not our enemies. They are Americans.” Tonight, as widely previewed, the Office of the President of the United States will be used, amplified by mainstream news media, to castigate half the country for wanting to put America First.

Below is a statement from Brooke Rollins, President and CEO of the America First Policy Institute, a working mother of four school-aged children, former Assistant to the President, Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, and Senior Strategist in the White House under President Donald J. Trump.

"America's best moments are where our shared principles and a shared founding bring us together and elevate us in dignity and promise. Even in the depths of a terrible civil war, Abraham Lincoln reminded Americans that '[w]e are not enemies, but friends.' Even against ferocious and unprecedented attacks, Donald Trump labored successfully to craft prosperity that reached every American, of every origin, of every race, of every community. This is America and American leadership in its finest tradition — a tradition of unity in liberty, respect for diversity, and of confidence in a shared future.

"Tonight, Joe Biden will step outside that tradition — into an entirely different tradition. He will leverage the majesty and grandeur of the American Presidency for petty partisan ends, and walk in the footsteps of cheap demagogues. We can call it many things. We can say it is unworthy of the office, which it assuredly is. We can say it is beneath him, which is a debatable proposition. But only one word is needed, and it will suffice:

"Un-American.

"As we listen to the President this evening, an alarming figure of both stridency and senescence, we must remember this. This is who he is. It is not who we are. If our national leadership finds us deplorable, then so be it. We can change that leadership — but it cannot change us."
