Fred Fleitz joined BBC America to discuss conservative national security policies.

July 31, 2024

Fred Fleitz, former Chief of Staff of the National Security Council under Donald Trump and now Vice Chair at the Center for American Security at the America First Policy Institute, recently discussed conservative national security policies on BBC America. Addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Fleitz clarified misconceptions about a proposed plan to end the war, which he and Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg had presented to Trump. Contrary to some reports, Fleitz emphasized that their research plan was not a peace plan but an analysis of how Biden's policies had exacerbated the conflict.

Fleitz underscored the need for strong presidential leadership and allied support to pressure both sides towards negotiation. He criticized the Biden administration for focusing on climate change rather than the real threats of Russia, nuclear proliferation, and China. Fleitz argued that Trump's approach would involve strategic negotiations without Ukraine ceding territory and highlighted the importance of dialogue between the US and Russia to prevent the conflict from worsening.

On China, Fleitz suggested maintaining strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan and emphasized the need for continuous dialogue and engagement, echoing sentiments of the late Henry Kissinger. He concluded by stressing the inadequacy of current US diplomacy with major adversaries like Russia and China, advocating for a more proactive approach.
