New Report Exposes Biden-Harris’s Proposed EV Mandates to Cost 200,000 American Jobs

September 9, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Today, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) published a new report that reveals the Biden-Harris Administration’s proposed electric vehicle (EV) mandates would cost nearly 200,000 jobs in the U.S. auto manufacturing industry. The draft regulations would require that EVs make up two-thirds of all new vehicle sales by 2032. If the administration finalizes this rule, it will devastate American workers, especially in the Midwest.

“The proposed mandates are not just a policy shift — they are a direct threat to American autoworkers and the economy,” said James Sherk, Director of AFPI’s Center for American Freedom and Former Special Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy on the White House Domestic Policy Council. “Kamala Harris’s push to ban gas-powered cars threatens to wipe out nearly 200,000 auto manufacturing jobs, decimating job markets in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, and economically devastating the hardworking families and communities that depend on these jobs.”

Report highlights:

  • Massive Job Losses: The Biden-Harris Administration’s current EV rules could wipe out 123,000 auto manufacturing jobs. If Vice President Kamala Harris’s extreme plan for an outright ban on gas-powered and hybrid vehicles by as soon as 2035 is implemented, job losses could soar to more than 191,000.
  • Destructive Midwest Impact: The Midwest will suffer the most, with Michigan (-37,000), Indiana (-24,000), and Ohio (-21,000) facing the highest job losses.
  • Manufacturing Changes: EVs require 30% to 40% less labor to assemble than gas-powered vehicles, leading to severe job cuts in the auto manufacturing sector.

Reducing conventional vehicle market share would lead to a 64.3% decrease in conventional vehicle sales, driving huge job losses across related manufacturing sectors. Losses, while not calculated in this report, would also be experienced in auto repair and other industries that support auto and auto parts manufacturers.
