Sep 4, 2024, 12:00PM

Greensboro, NC

On September 4th, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) visited Room at the Inn, a Greensboro, NC-based licensed shelter that provides hope, refuge, and support to pregnant women suffering from homelessness.

Led by AFPI board member and Hispanic Leadership Coalition (HLC) Chair Bob Unanue, HLC Executive Committee member Syddia Lee-Chee, and AFPI’S Ashley Hayek, Rachel Oglesby and Jorge Martinez, the visit aimed to spotlight AFPI’s HOPE Agenda. This vital initiative is focused on America First policies that advocate for a woman and child's shared right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”, and support women in challenging situations to reduce the number of abortions. We believe in an agenda based on HOPE: Health, Opportunity, Prosperity, and Empowerment.

Upon arrival, our delegation was warmly greeted by the Room at the Inn CEO Albert Hodges and his team, who oFered a detailed tour of the facility, showcasing its various services, including pregnancy resources, college access and job training programs, a faith initiative, and housing support. During the tour, the AFPI team engaged with program participants, who shared inspiring stories of resilience and transformation, demonstrating the tangible impact of America First and community-driven solutions.

One participant, Maria, shared her emotional journey: “I had lost everything and felt I had nowhere to turn, but Room at the Inn gave me a second chance. I am working full-time as a case worker specialist here, and my family is together.” Another participant, Erika, emphasized the importance of holistic support: “They didn’t just give me a bed – they gave me a future. Through their programs, I’ve gained skills and confidence to rebuild my life.”

Bob Unanue, a passionate advocate for faith and family, remarked during the visit, “At Goya, we believe in giving a hand up, not a handout. The work being done here reflects the heart of our mission and AFPI’s HOPE Agenda – to restore dignity, foster independence, and strengthen families.” Goya Foods, through its Goya Cares initiative, graciously donated two pallets of food products to Room at the Inn.

Fox News Greensboro covered the event, highlighting the critical discussions between AFPI leadership and Room at the Inn staff.

The visit highlights AFPI’s continued commitment to addressing societal challenges and advancing America First policies that uplift vulnerable populations. The inspiring testimonials, impactful discussions, and local media attention further amplify the momentum behind the HOPE Agenda as we work to protect the lives, safety, and well-being of women and babies, and build stronger, more resilient communities across America.
