AFPI Applauds House Bills to Strengthen Our Nation’s Education and Workforce Programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) released the following statements applauding the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for clearing two critically important bills to reform our Nation’s education and workforce programs: H.R. 6585, the Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act and H.R. 6655, A Stronger Workforce for America Act.
“Employers continue to cite a shortage of skilled workers as one of their biggest needs—and our higher education system is doing a poor job of meeting that need,” said Linda McMahon, Chair of the Board and Chair of the Center for the American Worker at AFPI. “The House Committee on Education and Workforce has provided two solutions today: enabling low-income students to pursue job-specific training programs, rather than just college degrees, and reforming and reauthorizing the Nation’s largest workforce development program. The full House and Senate should prioritize passage of both pieces of legislation and empower American workers to find careers that provide a source of fulfillment as well as a way to pay the bills.”
“Pell grants should not be restricted to just students enrolled in traditional two- and four-year degree programs,” said Jonathan Pidluzny, Ph.D., Director of the Higher Education Reform Initiative at the America First Policy Institute. “Workforce Pell will offer students and workers a much more direct route to employment. It will also force colleges and universities who want to compete for those students to design new programs that are better aligned to workforce demand.”
