AFPI Champions President Trump’s Executive Order Expanding School Choice
Washington, D.C. –The America First Policy Institute (AFPI) today championed President Trump’s signed executive order expanding educational opportunities and improving the nation’s public education system. The order empowers states to repurpose federal funds towards educational freedom, enabling families to send their children to the school that best fits their needs, regardless of income or ZIP code.
“We are entering a new golden age of American education,” said Erika Donalds, chair of AFPI’s Center for Education Opportunity. “This executive order puts power where it belongs - back in the hands of parents - to choose what’s best for their children. We thank President Trump for his leadership and decisive action to ensure we make education great again."
“Educational freedom is a game-changer for families, giving parents the power to choose the best education for their children,” said Dr. Laurie Todd-Smith, Director of the Center for Education Opportunity. “This executive order opens doors for low-income families and ensures military families receive the support they deserve.”
Key provisions of the executive order:
- State-based K-12 choice: The Secretary of Education will guide states in using federal funds for educational choice within 60 days.
- Education freedom in grant programs: The Secretary of Education and Secretary of Labor will review programs to expand education options within 90 days.
- Opportunities for low-income families: The Secretary of Health and Human Services will assist states in using block grants to support alternative education for low-income families.
- Supporting military families: The Secretary of Defense will explore options for military families to access alternative education choices within 90 days.
- Helping BIE students: The Secretary of the Interior will review options for Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) families to access private or charter schools with federal funds.
