Statement from Matthew Whitaker on Gun Control Package
“All Americans want safer and more secure communities free from gun violence. Unfortunately, the Senate gun control bill drafted behind closed doors and being voted on this week fails to accomplish this goal. While the increase in funding for mental health and school safety programs is useful, federal funding to states for the promotion of ‘red flag’ laws raises serious concerns about due process and the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens.
“While we understand the desire to take immediate action to curb gun violence in the aftermath of horrific events like the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas or the skyrocketing violent crime wave sweeping across the Nation, the focus of our collective efforts must be on holding violent perpetrators accountable for their actions and not on crafting overly broad legislation that may have unintended consequences for law-abiding citizens.”
