Deputy Director for Opportunity Zones, Center for Opportunity Now and Center for American Prosperity

Overall Responsibility: The Deputy Director of AFPI’s Center for Opportunity Now will work closely with AFPI’s Center for American Prosperity to lead and develop a plan to strengthen Opportunity Zones through targeted and strategic policy education and engagement at both the state and federal level.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop and refine reforms for enhancing Opportunity Zones at the federal level.
  • In coordination with AFPI’s Government Affairs, advance relationships with federal policy makers.
  • Draft potential executive orders and other executive-level policies catered toward uplifting underserved communities and building on the work of Opportunity Zones.
  • Create complementary state-level Opportunity Zone programs tailored to the unique needs, fiscal situations, and tax structures of each state and work to implement these policies through the development of model policy language.
  • Educate communities about the positive impacts of Opportunity Zones and encourage local entrepreneurs and investors to take advantage of the Opportunity Zones, driving local investment and creating jobs within the community.
  • In coordination with the Director of Opportunity Now and Senior Advisor for the Center for American Prosperity, provide regular project updates to AFPI’s President and CEO, Executive Director, Chief Policy Officer, Chief of Staff, and select stakeholders.

Type of Employment: Full-time or Contractor

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience is a minimum requirement.
  • 5-10 years’ professional experience in federal or state government and/or in public policy roles preferred. Opportunity Zone policy experience preferred.
  • Commitment to advancing the America First agenda and demonstrated support for free market principles and American liberties.
  • Clear track record exhibiting personal integrity in one’s professional career.
  • Strong research and analytical skills and demonstrated command of data/research material relevant to the Center’s specified policy area.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Opportunity Zones and the federal and state policy landscape.
  • Experience in designing and implementing legislation and/or policy recommendations with measurable results a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and clear, organized, writing.
  • The ability to comprehend and analyze complex legislative and regulatory issues, develop detailed free-market recommendations, provide quality research, and assist staff in doing the same.
  • Experience managing and coaching junior team members, as well as engaging and communicating with more senior leadership.
  • The ability to drive forward several multi-stage projects concurrently while meeting deadlines.
  • The ability to maintain productive and collegial relationships with staff and uphold the public reputation of the Institute.
  • The ability to build and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with external stakeholders.
