Matthew Schmid

Matthew Schmid is a New England native and serves as AFPI's Health and Harvest Campaign Director. A Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq war, he has over 20 years of experience spanning the non-profit, federal, and state government sectors in a variety of policy, operational, and fiscal roles, most recently at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Prior to that Matt oversaw the public safety and natural resources portfolios for the Maryland state budget and performance office, engaging in criminal justice reform and environmental issues. Matt also oversaw policy development and legislative advocacy for manufacturing and small business at the Maryland Department of Commerce as well as for Maryland farmers and watermen at the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Rounding out the policy experience, Matt has also worked in the world of affordable housing finance and transitional housing for homeless veterans, and served two years as a Maryland Governor’s Policy Fellow.

Born in Mexico to 2nd generation missionaries (his father was born and raised in Haiti), Matt was raised in a struggling former mill town in Massachusetts, while spending summers working on his uncle’s dairy farm in Pennsylvania and understands well the promise of America First policies where hard work, fairness, and opportunity are hallmarks. He holds a Master’s degree from Texas A&M and a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and lives outside of Annapolis, MD with his wife and two children who are all active members of their local church. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with the family and studying philosophy and theology.
